A West Hartford, Connecticut woman received a jury verdict in the amount of $770,000 against the town of West Hartford stemming from a slip and fall accident on a faulty sidewalk. The jury took only two hours to deliberate before returning with the verdict consisting of $500,000 in noneconomic damages, $100,000 for lost wages, $75,000 for lost future earnings, and $95,357 for her economic damages/medical bills, after they found the defendants to be 100% responsible for her injuries. The case turned heavily in favor of the plaintiff after expert testimony stated the gap in the faulty sidewalk was a clear hazard, and the town’s own engineer admitted to not performing routine inspections on town sidewalks. The plaintiff hopes that the verdict she received sets a strong precedent for similar cases in other jurisdictions.
